Central Africa: the new victim of Africa's diamond curse
The world is ignoring the trouble in Central Africa Republic because of western demand for diamonds there.
While there are sanctions for diamond trade there, factional rebels are fighting the government for control over the diamond domain.
In theory the two rebel groups - the UFDR (Union of Democratic Forces for Unity) and the CPJP (The Convention of Patriots for Justice and Peace) - are fighting the forces of the Government.
But in reality they are battling for dominance of the diamond domains. And the rival rebel commanders see children as the ideal warriors.

Their Story - The Street Children of Bangui, Central African Republic - July 2012 - War Child UK
In 2011 two friends decided they were going to cycle around the world in aid of War Child UK. Before leaving in, February 2012, they visited Bangui, Central African Republic to see firsthand how War Child UK are supporting a local charity there.
The charity, Fondation Voix du Coeur, provides help and support to the street children of Bangui.
Here is a short documentary telling the story of just a handful of street children in Bangui and how the Fondation Voix du Coeur, with the help of War Child UK, is providing essential support for them.
Please help us support War Child UK. They are a small international charity that protects children from the brutal effects of war and its consequences.
They currently work in Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Iraq, Uganda and now Syria.
They're on the ground -- supporting the most vulnerable children that are too often forgotten in the aftermath of conflict.

Rebel commander speaks of motives with Evgeny Lebedev

Evgeny Lebedev meets a reble commander in the Central African Republic. The commander (who we will not name) speaks of what motivates the rebel group, and says working with Unicef to free child soldiers is 'no problem'. Just days after this interview was filmed, the rebels took up arms again and now threaten the country's fragile peace. If an all out conflict is to erupt, it is likely that many children would be forcibly recruited into armed groups like this.
Independentvoices.com and The Independent are launching a campaign together with Unicef to tackle the problem of child soldiers in the Central African Republic (CAR). Over the coming weeks, through the pages of the newspaper, this site and social media we will be raising money for this crucial cause.
All the money raised in this appeal will be spent on Unicef's vital work for children who have been abducted by rebel groups and forced into armed conflict in CAR. Unicef - the United Nations children's fund - is the world's leading charity for children. It campaigns for children's rights, development, protection and survival, guided by the convention on the rights of the child.
Our goals:
- Negotiate: release of children from rebel groups
- Provide: immediate needs (food, medicine, shelter and simple things like a pen and paper)
- Provide: long term counselling and social support
- Trace: family members, and organise reunions
- Educate: to help children help themselves

Our Plea: Women and Girls from the Central African Republic Turn to the ICC for Justice
http://www.witness.org | This video is from our partnership with the Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice and JUPEDEC(Jeunesse Unie pour la Protection de l'Environnement et le Développement Communautaire)
In it, two courageous young women recount their abduction by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and the rapes, sexual violence and beatings they suffered while in captivity, as well as their life following the return to their communities.
In 2005, the ICC issued arrest warrants against Joseph Kony and four other senior LRA commanders for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Northern Uganda. The following year, Kony and the LRA moved out of Northern Uganda, conducting operations in several neighboring countries including the CAR. Since February 2008, the rebel group has been carrying out attacks in the South-Eastern provinces of the Central African Republic. It is estimated that hundreds of women and girls have been abducted and forcibly recruited by the LRA in attacks against the civilian population of the Central African Republic.

Live Drill - No water for our birthday in Central African Republic
Today is the fourth anniversary of charity: water. Our team spent it in a village called Moale, trying to dig our 200th water project in Central African Republic.
The people of Moale had been waiting for water for more than a decade. After two failed attempts to reach clean water many years ago, our local partner ICDI brought in a new drilling rig that could dig up to 700 feet. Unfortunately, they never made it that far. In what was by far the most challenging drill we’ve ever witnessed, the team came up short after 30 straight hours when the second borehole caved in.
It was a heartbreaking and messy day. We'd hoped to show you footage of a joyful village celebrating a successful drill, but we didn't achieve that today. We’re committed to transparency at charity: water, so instead, our Live Drill video will show you the reality and challenges we face on the ground.
We haven't given up on Moale. For now, the people there will have to wait a little bit longer for their well -- but we will be back. In the meantime, with your help, we can provide clean and safe drinking water for every Bayaka through this year's September Campaign.

"Dali, Tarkovski, Bunuel, Deren ... Add Don Askarian to the ranks of this dream team. "Askarian is capable of producing images that are unlike anything ever seen before, yet hit you with a primal immediacy".Giovanni Fazio, "The Japan Times" 25 March, 1995
Don Askarian
is a prize-winner at several international film festivals. In 1996 Don Askarian published his book "The Dangerous Light". Every year the interest to his really very unique films grow up. More and more film festivals come to honor Don Askarian with retrospectives. Serious TV-stations like ARD, WDR, ZDF, Channel 4, Arte, but also Belgian, Greek, Swiss, Slovakian, Armenian etc. TV Channels are constant co-producers and buyers of all his films. The films of Don Askarian were sold and broadcasted world wide about 100 times. Don Askarian, honored with a Harvard Film Archive retrospective, is considered the greatest Armenian filmmaker (but he is Russian-German- Dutch too). In 2004 he received Golden Camera Award for Life Achievement at Int. ART Film Festival, Slovakia. It turns out to be clearer what Hans-Werner Dannowski, the president of Interfilm, meant in 1992: "Time will pass until we recognize that Don Askarian is one of the most important filmmakers of our times. His movies will take up the time they need. Finally the films will have their success not with lies and assimilations but with truth." The retrospectives and special screenings around the world, on TV and important film festivals reflect it, mirror the growing interest in Don Askarian's films followed by a broad fascination by the audience.

The president of the Central African Republic asked for help from other nations
The president of the Central African Republic asked for help from other nations to stave off rebel advances that threaten his rule.
The former French colony asked France and the United States to help ensure the rebels return home instead of destroying and killing Central Africans.
His plea comes at a time when the US says it has evacuated its embassy in the Central African Republic as rebels threaten to advance towards the capital, Bangui.

From VOA Learning English, we bring you health news in Special English. UNICEF says the recent conflict in the Central African Republic has affected 1.8 million people. The United Nations Children's Fund says children make up half of the 800,000 people in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Rebel groups rose up against President Francois Bozizi in December. The Seleka rebel coalition signed a peace deal with the president in January. A UNICEF spokeswoman says some of the hardest-hit towns remain under rebel control. She says major risks for children include sexual violence and being recruited into armed groups.
UNICEF says eight percent of young children in the Central African Republic suffer from moderate acute malnutrition. Two percent suffer from severe cases of hunger. Yet, basic services are hard to find. The agency says that in areas affected by conflict, fewer than half of the children attend school. UNICEF says the rebels and pro-government militias are recruiting children as soldiers. The group says it aims to bring aid to more communities to help families displaced by the crisis in Central African Republic.
Globally, UNICEF is appealing for $1.4 billion this year to meet the urgent needs of tens of millions of children in 45 countries and regions. The children are threatened by conflict, natural disasters and other emergencies. In two areas of increasing conflict, the situation is especially threatening for children. In Syria, about 2.5 million people need assistance, and UNICEF says more than half of them are children. And a UNICEF official says that in Mali, children in the north are displaced, out of school, and at risk of being drawn into armed groups.
